Welcome to our string band page! We are an acoustic group of young violinists from Lexington, MA, and surrounding communities.
The string band is an ensemble that grew out of one my group classes. I perform with these talented young violinists, and together we play fun arrangements of Irish, Scandinavian, and American Fiddle tunes, sometimes pop tunes, as well as our own compositions.
Students need to be able to learn tunes by ear and play at approximately a Suzuki book 3 level and up. We are especially looking for capable violin players who also play another instrument such as viola, mandolin, guitar, piano, and bass. Please contact me for more information or click here to register.
String band will tour to the Kaustinen Festival in Finland the week of July 13 2020.
Questions and Answers
When and where will we meet?
String Band meets on Thursday evenings in East Lexington.
How much does it cost?
$340 per student per semester, from September-January and February-June. Students enrolled in Great Meadows Youth Orchestras are eligible for a 50% tuition discount.
What if I don’t know fiddle tunes?
We learn everything as we go. If you’ve never played fiddle music before, you will know how by the end of the first meeting.
Can I just read the music?
If you don’t learn quickly by ear, there will be sheet music to help out for most tunes. By the time we get to the concert, you will be able to play without sheet music.
I don’t have a second instrument. How do I play one in the group?
It depends which one it is. I have some instruments to borrow. Let me know what you are interested in playing and we’ll take it from there.
How will you pay for the trip to Finland?
We will be doing a combination of saving, fundraising, and performances to pay for the trip.
