Suzuki group classes are the essential counterpart to private violin lessons in the Suzuki approach. In our group classes, we cover the same body of curriculum as in private lessons. However, the critical advantage of group classes, in addition to reviewing repertoire and techniques as a group, lies in the mutual experience and social learning afforded to the students when they play their work together – not to mention the fun!
Here are some of the unique benefits to group classes in the Suzuki approach:
- Community: Group classes provide a social opportunity for students. At group class, students will make music with other children who are learning the same repertoire and skills as they are, so they can see they are not alone in their study. Parents benefit too!
- Support: While performing in other ensembles such as orchestras and chamber groups are important for the developing player, a group class supports the students in ways more specific to their study, including their solo repertoire and instrument-specific techniques.
- Motivation: Playing the violin at home can feel lonely. Having a group musical experience each week gives the children something to look forward to and to prepare for.
- Social Learning: Any parent knows that our instructions, once familiar to our children, can fall on deaf ears. Seeing another child play, on the other hand, instantly explains and clarifies what we are striving for. The students often learn from each other in a way that is more effective than direct instruction. More importantly, providing each child the opportunity to join in with what the other children are doing creates the desire to improve.
